Why I’m Glad I Made My Own Golf Clubs
Why I’m Glad I Made My Own Golf Clubs
I played a lot of golf growing up in New England, right through my college years, but then marriage, law school, and children did not leave any time for spending what amounted to a whole day on the golf course. I tend to regret that now but what is done is done. You cannot go back.
We ended up moving to Florida about mid career and although there were certainly many more months of the year when golf was possible I did not get back into playing for some time. I was invited by my client to an annual shareholders meeting of a small out-of-state corporation. It turned out that the shareholders were a closely knit group and in addition to the meeting had a whole schedule a social events going on, one of which was a golf outing.
I was reluctant to participate because I had not picked up a golf club for close to 20 years, but not wanting to be a stick in the mud I did it anyway. I played awful but I had a great time. The smell of freshly cut golf course grass brought back a lot of pleasant memories. It was enough to get me really excited about playing the game again.
It was easy enough finding friends and professional acquaintances who played frequently so I pulled my old clubs out of storage and joined them. I was amazed at how much golf equipment had changed in 20 years. My blade irons and tiny head steel shafted driver were totally out of place. Did I mention that my fairway woods were wood? In addition, every club in my bag was about 2 in. shorter than its contemporary cousin. I didn’t mind that much looking like a rube while everybody poked around in my bag. My old equipment was putting me at a serious competitive disadvantage. I have lots of fun playing golf, but I never play golf just for fun.
I picked up a couple golf magazines on the way home. I read a few of the articles but I was more interested in the golf club ads. I was shocked at the price of a new set of decent irons. I had paid less for some cars in my previous golfing career. What to do?
I discovered places like Golfsmith and Golfworks and a half a dozen other manufacturers that sold just the heads of irons and woods (now called metals), the ferrules, grips and everything else you needed to assemble a golf club. I joined a club making forum that happened to be full of engineer types that loved to play golf. I learned all about golf club desi

gn, the playing effects of golf shaft composition, and the magic power of swing weight. This was stuff I never even knew existed.
I ordered some iron heads and metal fairway heads from an outfit owned by Arnold Palmer, and a big titanium driver head from another outfit whose equipment had won the long driving championship. Once you have all the pieces for putting the clubs together it is actually a pretty simple and straightforward process. The only part that requires any skill, if you can call it that, and special tools or equipment is cutting the shafts to the proper length, which is critical for matching swing weight across your entire set.
That was about five years ago. I would not trade my irons for anything on the market today. I ended up spending about 25% of what it would have cost me for a new bag of clubs and got a lot of pleasure out of it besides. Of course, once you figure out how easy it is to assemble a golf club, you start buying specialty heads and shafts to experiment with. I probably have about a dozen putters, the same number of hybrid clubs, and half a dozen drivers. So my total golf club investment is probably more now than it would have been had I bought that first set of Mizunos that I saw in the ad but I still feel like I would have missed something.
